Become a UX Writer: 5 tips for you to not be afraid of it anymore
UX Writing is a new field that has been gaining strength over the years. More than just the writer who creates content for apps, being a UX Writer involves a lot of learning, especially for being still quite new. For this text, I will point out some aspects that helped me when I decided to try my hand at this career.
Understand what User Experience means
When I first heard about UX Writing, I didn't actually know what that was, so that was the first step - I needed to know the UX part before I could jump into the writing part. Just by googleing, I was able to gather a lot of information on user experience, why and where it comes from. All of this made me think about copy I had already written and proofread, and I came to the conclusion that I could have made the reader's life even better by simplifying things.
Talk to people who already work in the field
Talking to people who already work in app creation to understand the daily routine, challenges, ideas and how they usually appear is of great help. And you don't have to limit yourself to UX Writers. I've always had contact with developers and the Technology field, I had that part covered. After I started asking around and understanding components and flows, for example, I learned more about it.
Take a UX Writing course
Any kind of research is valid, however, taking a course is also a good idea. It will allow you to have a better idea of the work other people create by thinking of a similar environment as yours. Besides, this is a great place for you to get some feedback on your writing.
Learn from other fields that are related to UX Writing
Content creation is not only about Writing or Product Designing. Although they are very important subjects, Research and Service Designing play a very important role for UX Writers. Understanding the target audience properly and their behavior is imperative for a simple and readable copy.
Also, communication with other squads and departments working on the content - such as Marketing, Social Media, and Customer Support - is essential. Following the voice and tone guidelines is a requirement in the path for keeping the voice as one, whatever the channel is, whoever the writer or proofreader was.
UX Writing Challenge
This is a 15-day daily challenge in which you receive one e-mail each day to work on your UX Writing skills. The idea here is to create written solutions for the problems presented and share them in your social network to get feedback from others and share experiences and thoughts.
So, if you are interested in UX Writing, dig a little deeper into it and gather a little information. And don't be afraid of asking questions and admitting you don't know something: we are all learning about it and changing it as we work.
